Most webmasters are aware of the importance of relevant backlinks and any experienced webmaster will definitely work very hard to get as many backlinks to their site as they possible can.
While incoming links are very important not all links carry the same weight. What I mean by this, is that not any backlink will increase your traffic. The important thing about incoming links is that they must be relevant to your topic. This simply means that the sites that are linking to your site, must be about the same topics to let that backlink count.
Say for instance that you have a website about “clothes”, it will be of little use to you if a site about “lawyers” links to your site. Clothes and Lawyers are not related to each other. But if you have a website about clothes and four other sites that link to you are about kids clothes, coats, dresses, or shirts these would be considered relevant links.
One other thing you should not overlook, is to pay great attention to your anchor text. The anchor text is the text you use to describe the link. Lets use are keyword “kids clothes” – the anchor text would look something like this-’Kids clothes for BLA BLA BLA’ or something similar. Experiment a little. Just remember that no method is the best method and something which might work for somebody else, does not necessarily mean it will also work for you.

- Social Bookmarking – this is by far my best pick because in large it has brought the lions share of the web traffic to my site. There are some great sites that do this well such as Digg.com. You can submit a link to one of your stories with a brief description and if it interest the rests of the diggers you might make it to the homepage.
- Article Directories – I have to admit that there are a lot of crappy articles on most article directories so if you put your well written article on one it is bound to get snapped up by hundreds of content starved websites looking for new stories all they will all have backlinks pointing to you, Articledashboard.com seems to be a nice one.
- Forums Posting – This has got to be the most time consuming one if you do it correctly you must find people who might have some interest in your site, in my case those are computer related forums and I try to help people with there computer problems and drop a link to my site in the signature. Be careful with this one please don’t spam forums with a bunch of junk just to get you link out there if you can add to a discussion or help another member most forum admins will not have any problems with you putting a link in your sig.
- Website crawled – This is one of the hardest things to do but it has the potential to pay off big if you get a good ranking from Google. One thing that needs to be checked is your Robots.txt file this allows search engine spiders to correctly craw your pages a more detailed article on the subject can be found here www.searchengineworld.com. You also might consider trying to implement Google’s new Sitemap generator- this is on my to do list
- Directory Submissions – Submit your site to human edited web directories like Dmoz.org. It will help your page rank and may even get you some traffic.
